The purpose of IT  architecture management is to ensure that changes to the IT service delivery infrastructure are controlled and consistent. IT architecture management is divided into four main processes:

  • Service Lifecycle Management - Manages the lifecycle of IT services from planning and design through retirement.
  • Configuration Management - Controls and monitors changes to the IT service delivery infrastructure.
  • Capacity Management - Plans for future capacity needs and ensures that the IT service delivery infrastructure has adequate resources to meet demands.
  • Availability Management - Coordinates plans and processes so that agreed-upon availability levels are met or exceeded.

The IT architecture management process includes four main stages: planning, design, implementation, and operation. Each stage consists of several activities that need to be performed to ensure the overall process's success.

  • The first stage, planning, involves identifying the organization's IT infrastructure requirements and determining how these requirements can be met. This stage also includes developing an architecture plan and a roadmap for implementing the plan.
  • The second stage, design, involves creating a detailed IT infrastructure design. The organization's executive management must approve this design before it can be implemented.
  • The third stage, implementation, involves the actual performance of the IT infrastructure. This stage includes testing and validation of the infrastructure. The fourth stage, operation, is responsible for maintaining and improving the IT infrastructure. This stage contains monitoring and troubleshooting the infrastructure.
  • The fourth and final stage of IT architecture management is operation. In this stage, the team monitors and maintains the IT infrastructure. They also perform regular backups and updates to ensure the infrastructure.

    • Scope- Once the stakeholders have been identified, the next step is to define the scope of the process. This includes determining what activities are to be covered by the process and what resources will be required. For example, an architecture management process's scope might consist of requirements gathering, design, implementation, testing, and deployment.
    • Roles and responsibilities- One of the key steps in architecture management is to document roles and responsibilities. This ensures that everyone understands their part in the process and helps to avoid disruptions and confusion. Including roles and responsibilities in your architecture management process can help to improve efficiency and effectiveness.
    • Architecture governance- In architecture management, architecture governance ensures that the architecture of an organization's IT systems meets the needs of the business. This is done by establishing and maintaining standards and procedures for the architecture's development, implementation, and maintenance.
    • Target architecture and Roadmap- The target architecture is the architecture the organization wants to implement. The roadmap is the plan that details how the target architecture will be achieved. In architecture management, the target architecture and roadmap are developed through collaboration between the business, developers, and IT operations.
    • Partners and suppliers- Partners are involved in the architecture's design, development, and implementation, while suppliers provide the products and services required to support the architecture. architecture management aims to ensure that the organization's partners and suppliers can deliver the services and products that the organization needs in a timely and effective manner.
